The majority of people in north Africa practice Islam and speak Arabic.
It was determined in 2002 that Muslims form 48% of the inhabitants of Africa. Islam has a substantial presence in North Africa and greatly of West Africa, with minority settler communities in South Africa. Muslims sects are greatly divided into two categories: Sunni which is estimated 1.5 billion people or Shia approximately 170–340 million people. Most of the world's Muslims speak the Arabic language, and several can interpret the Quranic text and read the Quran.
