According to Richard Quinney-a conflict theorist-the reality of modern capitalist societies like America and the reality of crime in such societies, is that the powerful members of society (the elite, the rich, the owners of the means of production, the capitalists, the politicians) only criminalize the actions of the powerless (the poor, the lower class, the uneducated, the disenfranchised, ethnic minorities) so as to exploit, oppress, subjugate, and imprison them thereby preserving, consolidating, and perpetuating the status quo of social inequality in such societies.

Respuesta :

Five ways in which powerful members of society oppress, exploit, imprison and subjugate less powerful people are laws benefit the upper class; powerful groups exploit weak ones; powerful groups control weak groups; people who oppose powerful groups are imprisoned, and the upper class has a great influence on the economy.

Conflict Theory describes society based on two main factors:

  • There are conflicts between different sectors of society such as the high class and the middle class.
  • Some groups take advantage of others and control them due to differences in power.

This situation often leads to oppression, exploitation, imprisonment, and subjugation. Some examples of this situation include:

  • Laws benefit the upper class (oppression): Most laws are created to benefit the upper class. This occurs with taxes as some laws indirectly determine taxes to be higher for the low and middle class:
  • Wealthy nations exploit poor nations (exploitation): Nowadays, it is common for big companies to hire cheap labor in poor or developing countries.
  • People that opposed ideas from the upper class are imprisoned (imprisonment): One famous example of this situation occurred with Nelson Mandela who was imprisoned because his ideas and proposal opposed the ones of the dominant class in South Africa.
  • Powerful nations or groups control less powerful ones (subjugation): Developed nations have a great influence on less powerful nations. In the same way, powerful groups often control weaker ones.
  • The upper class controls the economy: In most societies the upper class includes the owners of the largest and most influential companies. This causes the upper class to have great power over the economy.
