Jackson’s supporters charge that Adams election was a “corrupt bargain” in which Henry Clay was made Secretary of State in return for giving his support to Adams. This election therefore brought the end of the era of good feelings, and brought about to new political parties. Supporters of Jackson’s called themselves Democrats while supporters of Adams and Clay called themselves whigs.
