The oxygen utilized in cellular respiration finally shows up as water (H2O). Cellular respiration produces H2O as a byproduct.

Cellular respiration has three main stages: glycolysis, the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation.

During oxidative phosphorylation, the electron transport chain (ETC) is coupled to the generation of a proton gradient, which is subsequently used to create ATP.

At the final of the ETC, the hydrogens (H) from the reduced coenzymes used during this process interact with molecular oxygen (O2) in order to generate water (H2O) as a byproduct of cellular respiration.
