How does the distance between the volcanoes in the Hawaiian Islands and the age of the volcanoes provide evidence of past plate motion. Write an evidence based claim.

Respuesta :

The formation of volcanoes is only possible over a "hot-spot", which is why the age and location of the Hawaiian volcanoes are relevant evidence as to past tectonic plate movement.

Volcanoes are known to form over what scientists refer to as hot spots. These are patches of seafloor through which magma emerges and over which tectonic plates move. When a plate moves over one of these spots, the magma penetrates the Earth's crust, propelling it upwards and forming a volcano.

The age and location of the Hawaiian volcanoes offer evidence of past plate movement given that as time passes, the tectonic plate on which the volcano is formed moved away from the hotspot.

Therefore, by relating the location of the volcanoes with that of the hotspot, and taking into account the speed of the movement of the plates, we can estimate the age of each volcano. In addition to this, we can create a history of plate movement by measuring this distance and the direction of the volcano in regards to the hotspot.
