The purpose of the author with this excerpt is to show readers how serious is Audra's amnesia and the effects of this memory loss.

Audra Thomas is a Texan girl who lost her ability to see and remember new and old events, after she suffered a simple injury when she was in fifth grade.

In "About a Girl" the author describes the life story of Audra Thomas and his experience when interviewing Audra who is considered to have one of the most unique cases of amnesia.

As part of the interview, the interviewer asks Audra about an old picture and Audra declares she knows the picture shows a girl that was her best friend but she cannot remember her at all.

This declaration shows how serious is Audra's amnesia because it is likely Audra had spent a lot of time with the girl even before her accident and despite this, she cannot remember this girl. Also, this shows the long-lasting effects of her amnesia as it seems her memory loss increases over time.
