In the poem, the speaker asks his neighbor about whether or not the wall is actually needed and if they need to repair it. The neighbor responds with the answer "Good fences make good neighbors". He is saying that they're better neighbors because of the wall and they mind their won business. The speaker however, does not see it's purpose. He talks about how the apple and pine trees aren't the same and therefore have begun to quarrel and battle each other.
