Tim has to write two papers worth 50 points each. To pass, he has to get at least 45% of the total points. However, scoring less than 30% of the points on either paper, even if his total for both papers is above 45%, will result in him failing. Which graph represents the region in which Tim fails? (Assume that he scores x points on paper A and y points on paper B.)

Based on the above situation the graph that represents the region in which Tim fails is the graph A.

Solution:

As, Given

Points scored in Paper A= x

Points scored in paper B= y

The Conditions in terms of equations which are applied , for passing of Tim is

Score should be above , 30% of 50=[tex]\frac{30}{100}\times 50[/tex]= 15 and 45% of 100=[tex]\frac{45}{100} \times 100= 45[/tex]

1. x  > 15

2. y  > 15

3. x +y ≥ 45

The set of equations represent , if Tim fails

a. x< 15

b. y < 15

c. x +y ≤45

Option (C)
