At the end of the World War II the first signs of mistrust began to appear between the US and USSR, escalating into the Cold War, a period of tense hostile relations. The existence of the nuclear bombs created an arms race between the US and Soviets. The Soviet Union detonated its first nuclear weapon in 1949.

The atomic bomb was a new weapon of mass destruction, people were very scared of it being used on them. After WW2, the Soviets wanted to prove they could be just as powerful, if not more powerful, than the Americans. They set out to build their own weapons and started an ARMs race. Basically, the soviets and Americans wanted to have the best and most weapons, so they fought against each other, starting the Cold War.
