Humanists created a confluence of words and music. Music composed in this era complemented and enhanced the emotions and words used in the compositions. Renaissance composers started using word painting, which was a musical expression of the emotion in the words of a musical piece. For example, if the words described a sad event, the music would be slow and set to minor keys and if the words described joy, the music would be fast-paced and set to a major key.
