According to the book Into the Rapids, the narrator talks about Wyatt and his journey with a group of people though the Arkansas River and how Wyatt almost lost his life when he fell into the river.
Furthermore, while going through the river, Wyatt mistakenly falls into the river which makes him fear for his life because the current was too strong and was already pushing him away from the boat.
Luckily for him however, the tide changes and the current begins to push him back towards the boat and safety.
