As a result of the Civil War, all agreements between the United States federal government and the Five Tribes of Oklahoma were Invalidated and all the tribes were forced to abolish slavery throughout Indian territory.
The Five Tribes of Oklahoma consisted of the Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, and Seminole Tribes and during the Civil War they allied with the Confederacy in the hopes that they would get their own state.
After the Union won, the Federal government demanded that:
- The Five Nations should free all enslaved people in their possession
- Sign new treaties because the old ones were invalidated on account of the Nations allying with the Confederacy
In conclusion, the victory by the Union allowed it to enforce the abolition of slavery in Native lands as well as the signing of new, even more restrictive treaties with the Natives.
