It strengthens the ability of species and populations to resist diseases, pests, changes in climate and other stresses. Gene variations underpin their capacity to evolve and their flexibility to adapt.
If an environmental change were to occur, lets say a virus came along, those better suited will survive and pass on their favourable genes. If the species were to be genetically identical, the virus would wipe out the species whereas diversity only wipes out the less suited to the virus and keep the strong ones to reproduce and adapt.
