During prophase the chromosomes separate from one another, and so the nucleolus disappears. The nuclear membrane has to be taken out of the way before metaphase, so that the chromosomes can move out of the confines of the nucleus. The nuclear membrane and nucleolus both disappear during prophase of mitosis and meiosis.
