Alkylating agents are used in the treatment of cancer cells. These were the first non-hormonal drugs that proved to be effective for the treatment of cancers.

These drugs contain alkylating agents which stops the cancer cells from multiplying by attaching an alkyl group to the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). This alkyl group is added to the nitrogenous base guanine (G). This addition prevents the DNA strands to bind with each other properly.

This causes the DNA strands to breaks which prevents the multiplication of the cancer cells which eventually leads to the death of the cancer cells.
