Facilitated transport by carrier proteins is a form of Passive transport.
Carrier proteins have many characteristics. Some of which include:
and many more.
Carrier proteins are large inter membrane or membrane-anchored proteins. This means that these proteins are found within the plasmatic membrane of a cell. These proteins traverse the entire membrane and have an opening towards the exterior of the cell and another towards the interior. They connect the two liquid environments on either side of the membrane, which is why only hydrophilic ions pass.
These membrane anchored proteins are a form of passive transport. This means that they will not use energy to complete their function. This comes with one condition, the movement of ions must always be in favor of gradient, meaning that they move towards the place with a lower concentration. Doing the opposite would require energy.
