Diffusion is the pass of small molecules through the membrane from one hypertonic solution to the hypotonic one, following the concentration gradient. In this experiment, 1) Beaker / 2) bag / 3) beaker / 4) bag.

Before answering the questions, let us review a few concepts
Diffusion
It is the pathway of only small molecules that freely move through the membrane. Diffusion is a slow passive transport that does not need the energy to occur but requires short distances and pronounced concentration gradients to be efficient.
Osmosis
It is the phenomenon that occurs when two dilutions of different concentrations -for instance, the interior of the cell and another solution- are separated by a semipermeable membrane.
The membrane allows the pass of water but not solute. Hence, water can move from the most diluted side to the less diluted one.
Water tends to go from the hypotonic solution to the hypertonic one and keeps doing so until concentrations on both sides get equal.
When talking about solutions, we can classify them as follows,
- Hypertonic ⇒ A hypertonic solution has a higher concentration of solute than the cell. This means that in the cell interior, the solute concentration is lower than in the solution itself.
- Isotonic ⇒ The solute concentration is the same inside the cell and outside.
- Hypotonic ⇒ A hypotonic solution has a lower concentration of solute than the cell. This means that in the cell interior, the solute concentration is higher than in the solution itself.
Water is considered to be a hypotonic solution.
In the exposed experiment we have
- one bag with corn starch and a half cup of water
- one beaker with iodine and halfway water
- cornstarch mixture submerged in the iodine water mixture
Iodine is an indicator for starch, meaning it changes color in its presence.
We will assume the following reults,
Starting Color Color after 15 minutes
Solution in Beaker Yellow (dark) Light yellow
Solution in Bag White Purple/blue
According to this table information, we can assume that iodine passed through to the bag interior.
- The color of the solution in the beaker became lighter because iodine molecules left.
- The color of the solution in the bag became purple/blue because iodine reacted with starch.
1. Which is more concentrated in starch?
According to the experiment proceed and the color of the solutions, we can assume that the solution in the bag is more concentrated in starch.
- Starch was only added to the bag.
- Only the solution in the bag turned blue/purple, which means that there was no starch in the beaker. This molecule is too big to diffuse from the bag to the beaker.
2. Which is more concentrated in iodine? ( beaker/baggie)
The solution in the beaker was more concentrated in iodine than the solution in the bag.
- Iodine was only added to the beaker.
- After 15 minutes, the solution in the bag turned blue/purple, meaning that iodine molecules moved from the beaker to the bag.
- This movement reflects that the concentration gradient made iodine pass through the membrane and that this molecule is small enough to diffuse.
3. With regard to iodine, which is hypertonic? [ beaker / baggie )
Remember that the hypertonic solution is more concentrated. So, concerning iodine, the solution in the beaker is hypertonic. It is more concentrated than the solution in the bag.
4. With regard to starch, which is hypertonic? ( beaker / baggie ]
Using the same reasoning as before, the solution in the bag is hypertonic because it is more concentrated in starch than the solution in the beaker.
