Anyone here can help me out with this simple math problem?

I have a quiz, and I'm pretty confused with all this square rooting nonsense. Is it possible if anyone could explain to me how 24 was changed to 25? Like, I know it says "(5) +24(5) = 25" but I'm confused still. The variables don't seem to be alike.

Answer:

Think of [tex]\sqrt{5}[/tex] as [tex]1\sqrt{5}[/tex].  If this is the case, [tex]1\sqrt{25}[/tex] + [tex]24\sqrt{5}[/tex] = [tex]25\sqrt{5}[/tex], since 1 + 24 = 25.  Hope this helps!

Answer:

25[tex]\sqrt[]{5}[/tex]

Step-by-step explanation:

There is an invisible 1 in front of [tex]\sqrt{5}[/tex]. When added to the 24[tex]\sqrt{5}[/tex], what is being square rooted doesn't change, only what is being multiplied to the square root.

Furthermore, if it helps to find the decimal form, 24[tex]\sqrt{5}[/tex] is 53.7 and [tex]\sqrt{5}[/tex] is 2.2. 53.7 + 2.2 is 55.9 or 25[tex]\sqrt{5}[/tex] because 25 x [tex]\sqrt{5}[/tex] is 55.9. :)
