The events in paragraph 8 contribute to the theme of the story thus:

  • Even though Mie can't attend school, her mother teaches her  how to read and write. This supports the theme of: Pursue your  goals no matter the obstacles.

In the story, "Red Cranes" by Jacey Choy, the main character Mie is described as a young girl with dreams. Despite her poor background, she desires to see the 'Red Cranes' and even climb above them.

She dreamt of visiting the mountain, Fujisan. She imagined plum blossoms that appeared in the spring, the Japanese maple tree that appeared in the autumn, and the snow that came in winter.

Mie was full of imagination, hopes, and dreams. So, despite her limitations that made going to school impossible at the moment, Mie's mother still taught her.

This illustrates the theme of pursuing our goals no matter the obstacles.
