1. Fill one can with soil/sand, and fill another one can with water.
2. Get the initial temperature of the water and soil/sand. Record.
3. Place a thermometer in each set up without touching the bottom of the can.
4. Put the set-up under the sun. Take the temperature every 2 minutes for 5 times for a total of 10 min. Record your data. Since this activity requires sunlight, this should be performed on a sunny day. If the weather does not permit, use lamps. Lamps can simulate the radiation effect of sunlight.
5. After 10 min of reading, remove the set-up under the sun for cooling process.
6. Have the last temperature results of water and last temperature result for soil as the initial temperature for cooling the water and soil.
7. Take the temperature every 2 minutes for 5 times for a total of 10 min.
8. Reminder: you have to be careful in getting your data, you should follow the procedure carefully to get a reliable data, and the bulb of the thermometer should not touch the bottom of the container.
