Although the members of the National Assembly agreed that France needed a new Constitution to provide a more just and balanced country, they disagreed on what the new Constitution should look like. Conscious of the public outrage and fierce commitment to change, France’s King Louis XVI agreed to the formation of the Legislative Assembly. This assembly was given the ability to create laws and approve or prevent any war the king declared on other countries. This assembly was apart of the new Constitution that promised to limit the king’s absolute authority. However, as often happens in new democratic practices, different beliefs and desires found within the Legislative Assembly soon caused the body to fracture. The assembly broke into three groups representing radical, moderate, and conservative ideas of the revolution. Radicals wanted big changes within the French government, Moderates wanted some change, and Conservatives still agreed with some form of rule by the king.
