Totalitarian regimes confiscate history and culture to:

  • Twist historical events to suit their propaganda
  • To ensure that people don't realize that they are being fooled

Totalitarian regimes work best by subjecting people to propaganda such that people believe that the government is actually doing what is best for them even though this is not the case.

History and culture can sometimes go against this propaganda and so the regime would come after them for instance:

  • History would have shown that Jews were not bad people so the Nazis removed such history books and came up with history that seemed to show that Jews were bad.
  • Culture might call for people to be more accepting of each other but because these regimes don't want that, they suppress this culture so that people do as they say.

In conclusion, history and culture might get in the way of totalitarian propaganda so they come against them to ensure that they continue to deceive people.
