The transfer of heat through flowing material is called CONVECTION.
Convection is one of the methods of heat transfer, the other two methods are conduction and radiation. Convection refers to the process through which heat is transported by mean of a heated fluid. Examples of fluid are water and air. When water is heated, it becomes less dense and rise as a result of increase in its buoyancy; as the heated water rise and moves up, it is immediately displaced by cold water. This set up a circulation motion in the water until all the water is evenly heated. The rising movement of the water carries energy with it. Fluids normally flow from a region of high temperature to the region of low temperature.
The heat transfer though flowing materials is called convection. In convection, hot liquid or gas rises while cold liquid or gas sinks forming a circulating current. An example of this is the natural phenomenon of sea breezes and land breezes. During the day, air over land is warmer than the air above the sea. Therefore, an on-shore breeze is felt. At night, air over the land is cooler than the air over the sea. Cooler air, then moves from land to sea in an off-shore breeze.
FURTHER EXPLANATION
Thermal (heat energy) can be transferred through convection, conduction, and radiation.
- Convection, as mentioned, only happens in fluids characterized by the upward or rising movement of fluids in warmer regions.
- Conduction is the process of transferring heat through the vibration of particles in a heated material. In hot parts of a material, the particles (atoms) vibrate strongly and have a lot of kinetic energy. This energy gets passed on to the neighboring atoms that are directly in contact with the high energy ones. They then pass on this energy to the other particles near them until energy is transferred throughout the material. Conduction happens in all materials that are directly touching. An example of conduction is the transfer of heat from a metal pan to the food when cooking. The atoms of the pan get heated and vibrate vigorously. They have high kinetic energy which gets transferred to the atoms of the food that is being cooked.
- Radiation is the transfer of energy through infrared waves. Infrared waves have the same characteristics as light waves: they travel very quickly even through a vacuum. This form of heat transfer allows energy to be transferred even in the absence of matter. Therefore, heat can be transferred even when two materials are not touching.
