At a silversmith’s shop, they have alloys that contain 40% silver and 50% silver. A custom order for a bracelet requires 150 g of 44% silver. How many of each alloy should be melted together to make the bracelet?

Respuesta :

The 90g of the 40% alloy and 60g of the 50% alloy should be melted together to make the bracelet.

  • Let us assume x be the grams of the 40% alloy.
  • And, y be the grams of 50% alloy.
  • Also, the bracelet needed 150 g of 44% silver.

Based on the above information, the following equations should be made

x + y = 150 ........(1)

0.40x + 0.50y = 0.44(150)

0.40x + 0.50y = 66 .......(2)

Now double the second equation

0.80x + y = 132

Now subtract the above equation from the 1st one

So,

0.20x = 18

Now multiply both sides by 5

So,

x = 90

And, y be 60

Therefore we can conclude that the 90g of the 40% alloy and 60g of the 50% alloy should be melted together to make the bracelet.
