Frost wedging is a type of physical weathering that occurs due to temperature changes.
Weathering is a defined as the breakdown of rock into smaller particles due to physical , chemical or biological means.
Physical weathering occurs when rock is broken down mechanically by the action of heat, water, or ice into smaller fragments. Here no change in the chemical nature of the rock can be seen.
Examples of physical weathering are
- frost wedging
- Exfoliation
- Thermal Expansion
Frost wedging occurs mainly in the polar regions, Now when water seeps into rock, because of the weather , it freezes, This causes expansion pf the rock resulting in cracks which overtime can cause the rock to break down into fragments.
