If something doesn't fulfill all of the characteristics of living things, they are considered Non living. in order to be considered a living thing, the thing needs to display all the charachteristics of a living thing.
What are the characteristics of Living Things?
1. The building blocks of living things are cells -
- Cells construct the body in the same way that bricks construct a structure. Cells divide and multiply, allowing them to build enormous animals such as trees and whales over time.
2. Living things show movement -
- movement can be either fast or quite sluggish. Plants bend toward the light and reach out roots to locate water, whereas animals can walk, run, swim, fly, or slither.
3. Every living creature has a metabolism-
- Metabolism refers to how living creatures use food and oxygen to generate energy for survival, as well as wastes as by-products. Digestion, respiration and excretion are the basis of metabolism and keeps an organism alive.
4. All living things grow-
- Most living things have this characteristic. Even once living organisms reach adulthood, they continue to grow in different ways. Muscle tissue expands with exercise, but brain cells grow with thought.
5. Environmental response-
- All living creatures have a reaction to their surroundings in some way. A tree that bends toward the sun is reacting to its surroundings.
6. All living things reproduce-
- Every species has a way of reproducing in which male and female cells combine to form a unique individual, are both possible.
What are non -living things?
- Non-living objects lack all of the properties of life.
- They don't move, reproduce, grow, or maintain homeostasis because they don't reproduce, breathe, or require energy. Non-living materials make up these objects.
hence non living things do not fullfill all of the charachteristics of living things.

- a virus is niether considered living or non living it is simply a complex entity that uses the host machinery of a live cell to reproduce and generate energy.
