Please explain in an easy way how to evaluate the following.

Answer 1

a) ignore the lines for now… 4-7=-3 the lines mean how far way -3 is from zero, it’s 3 away so the answer for a is 3
b) 4 is 4 away from zero so just solve it as 4-7 which is -3

Answer 2

1) Ignore the lines
2) do the subtraction in between the lines
3) if the answer is negative just make it positive (this only applies for in-between the lines, if its outside the lines don’t make the negative positive. )

a) |4-7| = |-3| = 3

b) |4|-7 = 4-7 = -3
