Read the passage below from "House of Thebes" and fill in the blank with the word that belongs.

After he had gone his two sons asserted their right to the throne, and each tried to be made king. Eteocles succeeded although he was the younger, and he expelled his brother from Thebes. Polyneices took refuge in Argos and did all he could to arouse against Thebes. His intention was to collect an army to march against the city.

Enmity was incited by the expelled brother, Polyneices, against his brother's leadership of Thebes.

Enmity fuels hostility. The army that Polyneices raised must be hostile against his brother's leadership before it could march against the city. The purpose of fueling enmity against the city was to improve Polyneices' claim to the kingship of Thebes.

Thus, Polyneices wanted to reassert his right to the throne of his father as the elder son.
