The irony can be seen in the xenophobic behavior of travelers.

"The Innocents Abroad" was written by Mark Twain and has a strong ironic and satirical content, which is natural to this author. In this story, we get to know Quaker City that uses a boat to travel across Europe with a group of travelers.

Travelers pass through different places with different and rich cultures, however, although these characters are people who like to get to know other nations, they are xenophobic and make acidic comments about the places they visit. As you can see in the quotes below, which were taken from "The Innocents Abroad":

  • “In Paris they just simply opened their eyes and stared when we spoke to them in French! We never did succeed in making those idiots understand their own language.”
  • “Why will people be so st*p!d as to suppose themselves the only foreigners among a crowd of ten thousand persons?”
