Roosevelt wanted progressivism in the federal government because he saw many advantages over disadvantages. For example, progressives fought for women's suffrage, social welfare, prison reform, prohibition, and civil liberties, among other things. Roosevelt, as a Progressive Republican, believed in government action to alleviate social ills, which he denounced as president in 1908.
