"Are you all right?” A woman’s voice asked. I jumped, surprised at being spoken to. And then I kind of jumped again when I saw who was speaking. Three things hit me at once about the woman sitting down next to me. She was younger than most of the others, closer to my age if not quite as young. And she was pretty. And she was white. I had known that some of the riders would be white, but still it felt strange to speak to her.
