Soon, Medusa began to resent Athena. Rather than appreciate its beauty and share the
awe the rest of the people had for the temple, Medusa compared its objects to herself. She
proudly declared that the sculptures would be so much more majestic had she been their
subject. The paintings, she insisted, would have looked grander if only Medusa’s face had
graced the canvas instead of Athena’s.
