"A plot of land is in the shape of a triangle. If one side is x meters, a second side is (2x-3) meters, and a third side is (3x-5) meters, express the perimeter of the lot as a simplified expression in x."

First let's write it down, 

 x + (2x - 3) + (3x - 5) 

Then remove the parentheses

 x + 2x - 3 + 3x - 5 

 first combine the x + 2x = 3x to obtain: 3x - 3 + 3x - 5 

 then combine the 3x + 3x = 6x to obtain: 

 6x - 3 - 5 

rewrite 6x - 3 - 5 as 6x + (-3) + (-5) 

And the answer would be 6x + (-8) = 

6x - 8
