when addends in two facts are the same why are the sums the same

Because they are like a number family,If you have 2 + 1 you will get 3. Right? So 1 + 2 would equal 3, right? So they are basically flipped around from my understanding.But no matter what order you use addends in (discounting sum) you will get the same sum.
