The Junior High band sold candy for the fundraiser. The profit from the candy sale was $180. The girls sold three times as much candy as the boys. How much of the total profit did the boys provide?

let X the price of candy the girls sold
and Y for the boys
so we have X + Y = 180
                   and X = 3Y
so X + Y = 180
     X - 3Y =0
is a system of equation for solving
it is 4Y=180 implies Y= 45, and X =3Y =3 .45 =135

so the boys did provide $45
