In the following equation, identify the x-intercepts in the graph y = 3x2 + 19x – 40.

y=3^2+19x-40

3x^2+19x-40=0
(3x-5)(x+8)=0
work them out separately as 2 equations:

3x-5=0. x+8=0
3x=5. x=-8
x=5/3

therefore, the x-intercepts are 5/3 and -8

Assume y = 0 and solve

0 = (x + 8)(3x - 5)

0 = (x +8)
0 = (3x - 5)

for y, x will intercept at:
x = -8, x = 5/3
