The Treaty of Versailles irony had did the opposite of what it intended. The Entente wanted Germany to not be able to "cause" another World War and placed massive war reparations and military restrictions on it. This would be troubling for the new established Weimar Republic that was very unstable and corrupt. Hitler had been a candidate who promised the German people to return political and economic stability, which he did when he became Chancellor in 1933.
