I think matter can escape in an open system, it’s open, air and everything can flow through. In a closed system matter can not escape because it is closed, keeping everything inside. A fish bowl would be an open system, the top of the bowel is open so matter can escape.

Earth is an open system, matter flows trough the atmosphere and flows into space.
