Natural variation provided the phenotypes that natural selection then acted on, over time causing evolution
Natural variation causes a change in the genetic character of an organism. If the genetic variation is useful for the organism, it passes on to the next generation and thus, leads to evolution.
What is the natural variation?
- Natural variation is the genetic variations that are found within a species over time. It can be advantageous and non-advantageous.
- If the natural variation is beneficial for the organism, it helps in the long survival and reproduction of species. The characters are passed on from generation to generation.
- This is called natural selection as the natural variation selects the long-term survival of a species.
- On the other hand, when species are not adapted to the changing environmental conditions (due to no or detrimental natural variation), they reproduce less and then finally become extinct.
Thus, whenever there is beneficial natural variation, the species reproduce more and the variation passes on from generation to generation, ensuring the survival of the species for a long time. This results in evolution.
