Cilia protects the nasal passageways and other parts of the respiratory tract. It filters out dust and other particles that enter the nose through the breathed air. Cilia propels a liquid layer of mucus that covers the airways. The mucus layer traps pathogens (potentially infectious microorganisms) and other particles, preventing them from reaching the lungs.
