Native American's Interior nomination thrills tribal leaders, activists across Arizona
President-elect Joe Biden has nominated Representative Deb Haaland to be Interior secretary in his Cabinet. Haaland is a Native American. She is a Democrat from New Mexico. Haaland would be the first tribal Interior secretary. She would also be one of the first Native Americans in a Cabinet-level slot.
The Cabinet is made up of the heads of 15 departments in the executive branch of government. They are the president's closest advisers. Cabinet members are nominated by the president. Then they are approved by the Senate.
The Interior secretary is the head of the Department of the Interior. The department was begun in 1849. It manages the country's land and water resources. It manages wildlife and energy resources. It also works with Indigenous communities. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is part of the Interior Department.
Haaland was elected two years ago. She was one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress.
