There would be an environmental problem if sulfur dioxide gas escaped into the atmosphere as it causes acid rain.

What is acid rain?

Rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, meaning it contains high levels of hydrogen ions, is known as acid rain.

When sulphur dioxide gas is escaped into the atmosphere then due to the presence of moisture in the environment it will changes into sulphuric acid as a reslut of which acid rain happens. And acid rains causes harm to the environment mainly to the lakes, tress and forests, etc.

Hence escape of sulphur dioxide causes acid rain.
