Italy was not a united state after the Crimean War but their most influential state, Sardinia, had participated in the war. During the peace conference to end the Crimean war, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Camillo Benso, sought to end Austrian dominance over Italy.

He lobbied both France and Britain to help and was eventually successful with the French. They then made a secret pact to attack Austria in what was called the Plombières Agreement.
