After the civil war, the south rebuild cities destroyed by the total war strategy. They had to build everything right back up. That was known as Reconstruction.
The Reconstruction era was the period in American history which lasted from 1863 to 1877. It comprises the period followingthe American Civil War and during which attempts were made to repair the inequities of slavery and its political, social, and economic consequences as well as to solve the problems stemming from the readmission to the Union of the 11 states that had seceded at or before the outbreak of war.
