Chief Joseph was a Nez Perce Native American leader of the Wallowa band of Nez Perce. In the 1870s, he led a resistance to the ongoing encroachment of Nez Perce land, but eventually, Chief Joseph and his people were defeated and sent to Indian Territory in Oklahoma. In 1879, Chief Joseph visited Washington and delivered a Speech to Congress, speaking out against the crimes of the US government. In the speech, Chief Joseph expressed his hopes for equality and peace in America, he believed that all should be treated in the same way because we are all part of the same world ‘We shall be all alike...with one sky above us and one country around us and one government for all’, and only then, people will live in peace ‘we shall have no more wars’.
