The Jay treaty was negotiated by John Jay with England because Great Britan had been stationed at the Northwest Territory and had been stopping American ships from trading with France since Britan and France had been at war with eachother. The treaty was quite unpopular, as the people of France thought that their side had been much too generous, whilst the Americans thought that John Jay hadn't negotiated enough, or rather that he had to negotiate at all. They couldn't seem to understand why they needed permission from England as to who they were to trade with. Although it was disliked on both parts, it kept America from going into war with little resources and low winning chances.
