Point out that we have seen examples of games and activities that involved the concepts of equality and inequality and which did not require the use of decimal symbolism. Discuss the need for these types of activities to develop conceptual understanding before symbols and rules are introduced. Then place the following transparency on the overhead which calls for the use of models for teaching rational numbers.
