how do i distribute 17=3(x-5)+8

3*x=3x
3*-5=15
you just distribute the 3 to both values in the parenthesis. 
so then we have 
17=3x-15+8
simplify
17=3x-23
add 23 to both sides
40=3x
divide both sides by 3
x=13 1/3
