In 1953, scientists Stanley Miller and Harold Urey experimented to verify that organic molecules could form spontaneously under environmental conditions similar to those of the Earth in its early days.
To do this, they built a closed system in which they included a container with hot water and a mixture of gases that supposedly abounded in the Earth's atmosphere at the beginning. In addition, they devised the way to simulate lightning bolts that provided energy for chemical reactions in the atmosphere.
After running their experiment for a week, they resulted in the formation of various types of amino acids, sugars, lipids, and other organic molecules. This experiment allowed them to show that at least some of the structural units of these molecules could form spontaneously from simple compounds.
