The sound gets transmitted from your phone to your ear - air - eardrum- bones- nerve ending-electrical impulse - cranial nerve - the brain.

Sound

Sound is a compression wave that requires a medium upon which to travel. When the phone rings the sound waves of the ring travels through the air and reach the ear.

The air that vibrated due to sound waves enters the ear and vibrates the eardrum sympathetically, which acts on the bones malleus, incus, and stapes in the ear.

The vibrations of bones act on the hairs in the cochlea (inner ear), which acts on the aural nerve endings are set into motion. These nerve endings transform the vibrations into electrical impulses that then travel along the eighth cranial nerve (auditory nerve) to the brain.
